DFL Legislators Line Up Behind Jon Applebaum for State Representative in HD44B

MINNETONKA, MN

Today, Jon Applebaum proudly announces the endorsements of Senator Ron Latz (DFL-St. Louis Park), Representative Ryan Winkler (DFL-Golden Valley), and Representative John Lesch (DFL-St. Paul).  These three well-known legislators are respected in the community and have a combined 32 years of legislative experience between them.

Senator Ron Latz announced, “Jon Applebaum knows that small businesses are the engines that drive our economy.  He understands that we must encourage economic prosperity in our state by supporting our local businesses, entrepreneurs, and by ensuring workers earn a fair and livable wage, so that Minnesota continues to be an economic leader.  Jon Applebaum will be a most valuable addition to the legislature.  I am excited to support him.”

In announcing his endorsement, Representative Winkler stated, “Jon Applebaum is a strong advocate for working families and is committed to ensuring that everyone has an equal opportunity for success through education.  He knows the importance of investing in early childhood education so all Minnesota kids have a strong foundation from which to grow.  I know the hard work and dedication Jon will bring to this issue at the Capitol and I look forward to working with him.”

Along with Sen. Latz and Rep. Winkler, Representative Lesch voiced his support for Jon Applebaum, declaring, “I am endorsing Jon Applebaum because of the dedicated passion he exudes for public service, his small business background, and his admirable commitment to doing whatever it takes for a Democrat to keep this seat.  Jon Applebaum will bring fresh ideas and new leadership for his hometown district – and will be a breath of fresh air at the Capitol!  He will be an asset to his community and all Minnesotans at the legislature, and I look forward to serving alongside him.”

In response to these endorsements, Applebaum said, “I am very honored to receive endorsements from such great legislators.  During their time at the Capitol they have done so much to move Minnesota forward and made significant contributions to provide for and maintain our high quality of life.  I cannot wait to join them in the legislature so we can continue that great work.”

Jon Applebaum is a real estate consultant for affordable housing developments at a company he founded.  He also serves as Of Counsel to a growing law firm located in the western suburbs of Minneapolis.  He is a graduate of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee and the University of Minnesota Law School.

Applebaum officially enters DFL Primary for Minnesota House Dist. 44B seat

MINNETONKA, MN – Yesterday, local attorney and small business owner Jon Applebaum filed his campaign for state representative in House District 44B with the Minnesota Secretary of State.  Retired Representative John Benson (DFL) recently held the now open seat for four terms.

“It has been a pleasure getting to know Representative Benson over the past few years and I thank him for his fine service to our district and to Minnesota,” Applebaum said.  “I look forward to build upon his work and would be honored to serve the community in which I was raised.”

Applebaum declared, “I am running for state representative because I want Minnesota to be the best state in the country – and I believe that starts with improving our state government.”

Applebaum considers education, jobs/economy and transportation as the issues drawing the most concern amongst constituents.

He counts several prominent DFLers amongst his supporters, including Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman, Ambassador Sam and Sylvia Kaplan, Ruth Usem, Dean Phillips, former Congressman Bill Luther and Janet Robert, Buck Humphrey, and Eric and Andrew Dayton.  Governor Mark Dayton recently appointed Applebaum to the Minnesota Academic Excellence Foundation board of directors.

“I’m supporting Jon because he’s a good friend and because I think he would make a great state representative,” Eric Dayton said. “He’s running for the right reason, which is a genuine desire to serve his community and his state.  He grew up in the district and knows it well.  And, as a business owner, I like that Jon would bring a background in business to the role.”

Applebaum founded JYA Ventures, a consulting firm specializing in real estate development.  He also serves as Of Counsel to a growing law firm located in the western suburbs of Minneapolis.  He is a graduate of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee and the University of Minnesota Law School.

Endorsing Convention and Aftermath

Sorry for the delay – I’ve been meaning to send you all an update!

On March 15th, Senate District 44 held its endorsing convention, where three candidates sought to earn the DFL endorsement by receiving 60% of the vote amongst the delegates in attendance.  It was a very exciting day for everyone involved.

With three strong candidates, our campaign was unable to clear the 60% bar needed for the endorsement – the convention ended without an endorsed candidate.  However, the true strength of the candidates was demonstrated on the first ballot, which we won by 10 percentage points!

One delegate (not one of ours) approached one of our volunteers and said she would support me because out of all the candidates, I was the only one who emailed her, sent her letters, called her, and visited her to hear what she really cared about.  That is what this campaign is about.

So on to the August 12th primary we go – and in a great position!

In the past month I’ve been busy.  I’ve talked to most delegates at the convention and asked them what I can do better to be their choice in August.  I’m not a natural “politician” so I know I can’t just coast.  I have to improve each day by connecting with the people of this district.  Our district doesn’t need a politician – we need someone committed to our best interest, and committed to being the best advocate in St. Paul. I know I am that candidate because I know I will work harder than anyone else, and I’m not afraid of a little criticism.

Campaigns are more expensive than you’d think.

I’ve been out raising money and working hard to get our message out to all of the voters in 44B from now until November.  My team and I are incredibly grateful to have so many supporters who have contributed so far.  A growing number of folks have offered to host fundraisers for us this summer – thank you!  If it ever stops snowing, maybe we’ll get a chance to grill?

Our organization is also expanding so we can effectively employ our strategy.  We have had great responses so far and I am thrilled with the excitement and enthusiasm of our grassroots team!

Finally, I have been meeting with people.

One-on-one.  Small groups.  Large groups.  Now is the time to share our ideas about how to make our district and our state the best place to live in the country.  I’m visiting with neighbors and community members from all walks of life, and I’m learning about what matters most to each of us.  Despite growing up here and living here the vast majority of my life, I’m learning new things about our community every day.  It is incredible to get to know so many more people in our community, and make so many new friends.

This is what I like best about being a candidate.

I promise to continue to work hard to earn the support of our community – including you! – and to fight for the honor of representing our district at the Capitol.

More soon – in the meantime consider following me on Twitter @JonApplebaum44B and joining my Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/jonapplebaum44B for more updates about the campaign.

Thank you!
